Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll (born February 2, 1977), known simply as Shakira is a Colombian from Lebanese origin, contralto singer, songwriter, instrumentalist, record producer, dancer, philanthropist and occasional actress who has been a major figure in the pop music scene of Latin America since the mid-1990s. In 2001, she broke through into the English-speaking world with the release of Laundry Service, which sold over fifteen million copies worldwide. A two-time Grammy Award-winning and seven-time Latin Grammy Award-winning artist, Shakira is the highest-selling Colombian artist of all time, having sold more than 50 million albums worldwide according to BMI. She is also the only artist from South America to reach the number-one spot on the Billboard Hot 100, the Australian ARIA chart, the United World Chart and the UK Singles Chart.According to the United World Chart, Shakira is as of 2007 the fourth most successful artist so far from the 2000s. She is also the only artist to have two songs in the top ten of the most successful singles since 1999. She has a total of four, the lowest one being number 51. During an online chat with her fans in “El Heraldo” she revealed that she was going to start writing her new album in February 2008. No official release date has been announced.

In March, 2008 she will take part in Live 8 Latino. Proceeds from this event will go to ALAS, a charity that she co-founded.

My Blueberry Nights is a 2007 film directed by Wong Kar Wai, starring Norah Jones and Jude Law. It also features Rachel Weisz, Natalie Portman and David Strathairn. The director describes it as “a story of a woman who takes the long route instead of the short one to meet up with the man she loves.” It is Wong’s first film in English.My Blueberry Nights was the opening film for the 2007 Cannes Film Festival on May 16, 2007.Jeremy (Jude Law) runs a cafe in New York City. Elizabeth (Norah Jones) finds out from him that her boyfriend has eaten in the restaurant with another woman. Elizabeth is angry and leaves him; she gives her keys to Jeremy, in case the boyfriend comes to collect them. Elizabeth returns several times, she and Jeremy like each other.
